What is One Touch Switching (OTS)?

One Touch Switch (OTS) is a new process introduced in September 2024, designed to make switching broadband providers easier, quicker, and more reliable.  Here are the key points:

  • Simplified Process: With One Touch Switch, you only need to find a new broadband deal that is available in your area, and after you sign up, your new provider will initiate the switch. Your new provider will handle the entire process, including notifying your old broadband provider.
  • No Need to Contact Old Provider: You don’t need to speak to your current provider to cancel your service. Your new provider will manage the switch and ensure your old service is terminated once the new one is active.
  • Compensation for Issues: If there are any problems during the switch, such as a loss of service for more than one working day or the new provider misses installation appointments,  providers are required to compensate you within 30 days.
  • Option to Manage the switch yourself: You still have the options to manage the switch yourself. This is useful if you want an overlap in services to ensure that you are still have an internet connection in case there are issues with you new providers installation. You need to make you new provider aware if you want to manage the switch yourself.
  • Switching a bundle: If you use a bundle of services with a provider,  such as home phone, broadband and TV package, you can still use the One Touch Switch (OTS) process as described above. However, you may need to notify your old provider to cancel other services that you are also switching as part of a bundle – particularly if the switch involves cancelling a TV service. Your old provider will give you information on what your options are regarding these the switching.

Understanding different types of broadband connections in your area

Broadband technology has evolved significantly over the years, resulting in various types of connections available to consumers. The primary types of broadband connections that are likely available in your area will include DSL, cable, fiber-optic, satellite, and wireless broadband. Each type comes with its own set of advantages and drawbacks, making it essential to understand them before making a choice.

  • DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) utilises existing telephone lines to transmit data, which makes it widely available in urban and suburban areas. While DSL can offer decent speeds, it often suffers from slower performance as the distance from the exchange increases.
  • Cable broadband uses coaxial cables, which allow for higher speeds compared to DSL. However, cable internet can be affected by network congestion, especially during peak usage hours in your local area, leading to fluctuating performance.
  • Fibre-optic broadband is considered the gold standard in internet technology. This connection uses light signals transmitted through glass fibers, resulting in incredibly high speeds and reliability. However, the availability of fibre-optic service may be limited in some areas.
  • Satellite broadband is another option that can reach rural locations where other types may not be feasible. While it offers widespread coverage, it often comes with higher latency and lower speeds compared to wired options. An example is SpaceX Starlink Satellite broadband.
  • Wireless broadband, including 4G and 5G, provides flexibility and mobility but may also experience fluctuations in speed based on location and network congestion. Understanding these different types of connections will help you narrow down your choices.
