Is Virgin Media M500 worth it? Speeds, price and alternatives

Virgin Media M500 gives you an average 516 Mbps download speed and 52 Mbps upload speed. It can be a good fit when several people are online at once, you regularly move large files, or the price is close to a slower package at your address. But don’t assume a 500 Mbps plan is automatically the best choice. Compare M500 with M250, M350 and Gig1 using the full price schedule for your order before you commit.

What is Virgin Media M500?

M500 is one of Virgin Media’s home broadband packages. Virgin Media lists an average download speed of 516 Mbps and an average upload speed of 52 Mbps. The “500” in the name is a guide to the package tier. The published average download speed is 516 Mbps, not a promise that every device will record that speed over Wi-Fi.

Download speed affects how quickly your connection receives data, such as a film, game or website. Upload speed affects how quickly it sends data, which matters for video calls, cloud backups and sharing large files.

What do download and upload speeds mean?

Download speed affects how quickly your connection receives data. Upload speed affects how quickly it sends data. Virgin Media lists M500 at an average 516 Mbps download and 52 Mbps upload.

The difference between download and upload is worth noticing. M500 is much faster at receiving data than sending it. That is normal for many home broadband packages, but people who regularly upload large video files or work with substantial cloud backups should compare upload speeds as well as headline downloads.

Is 516 Mbps fast enough for your home?

Is Virgin Media M500 fast enoughFor most households, 516 Mbps gives plenty of room for several people to stream, browse, play online and work from home at the same time. It is most useful when those activities overlap or when devices regularly download large files. If one person mainly checks email, browses and watches a stream, the extra capacity may sit unused.

Netflix recommends a stable 15 Mbps connection for one 4K stream. That gives a useful point of comparison: M500’s advertised average download speed is far beyond what one 4K stream needs. It doesn’t mean you should divide 516 by 15 and treat the answer as the number of streams your home can run. Other devices, Wi-Fi conditions, the streaming service, network overhead and simultaneous activity all affect the real experience.

The practical question is how your household uses broadband together. A busy family with several 4K screens, console downloads, video calls and cloud backups has a better case for M500 than a couple who mostly browse and stream one programme at a time.

If you’re unsure what your current connection delivers, run our broadband speed test at different times of day and on more than one device. A speed test over Wi-Fi measures the connection as your device receives it, not necessarily the maximum speed entering the home.

M250 vs M350 vs M500 vs Gig1

Virgin Media’s current M500 package page lists the average speeds below. These are provider figures, not an independent test of performance at your address.

Advertised average speeds for Virgin Media’s main broadband tiers
Virgin Media package Average download Average upload What the extra speed is for
M250 264 Mbps 25 Mbps Everyday use and smaller households
M350 362 Mbps 36 Mbps More capacity for busy homes and larger downloads
M500 516 Mbps 52 Mbps Several simultaneous users, large downloads and extra headroom
Gig1 1,130 Mbps 104 Mbps Very large downloads, heavy concurrent use and higher upload capacity

Virgin’s current product page lists the average M500 and Gig1 upload figures above. Upload speeds for other tiers can vary by package and offer, so check the package details shown for your address instead of assuming they scale in the same way.

M500 is the middle ground. It is a sizeable step up from M350, but Gig1 is more than twice its average download speed. That does not make Gig1 automatically better value. If it costs significantly more over the full contract, you may never use the extra speed. If the gap is small and your home regularly moves large files or has many simultaneous users, it is worth comparing before choosing M500.

The right comparison is the difference in total contract cost divided by the difference in speed and features. Don’t compare only the first monthly price. Offers can include scheduled price changes, different minimum terms, setup fees or bundled services. Your checkout summary is the source to use for the offer you can actually order.

How does Virgin Media M500 compare with other 500 Mbps packages?

M500 is not the only way to get around 500 Mbps. BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone and EE each have a package close to that speed in the broadband offers listed for comparison. Smaller networks can be strong alternatives too, especially if you need fast upload speeds or a shorter contract.

Several alternatives are full-fibre connections. That can make a practical difference to upload speed, but the network and package available depend on your address.

What does full fibre mean?

Full fibre carries fibre-optic cable all the way to the property. It can support high download and upload speeds, but the packages and speeds you can order depend on which network reaches your address.

National provider alternatives

The table compares five national alternatives with M500. Speeds are the average download and upload figures listed for each package.

Five national provider alternatives to Virgin Media M500
Provider and package Average download / upload Price Minimum term
BT Full Fibre 500 500 / 73 Mbps From £27.99/month 24 months
Sky Full Fibre 500 500 / 59 Mbps From £29/month 24 months
TalkTalk Full Fibre 500 500 / 75 Mbps From £30/month 24 months
Vodafone Full Fibre 500 500 / 68 Mbps From £28/month 24 months
EE Full Fibre 500 500 / 75 Mbps From £25.99/month 24 months

Smaller full-fibre networks

These three networks don’t cover every part of the UK. Their packages are worth checking if their network reaches your home. Gigaclear’s 600 Mbps package is the closest comparable tier in the deal list.

Three smaller full-fibre network alternatives
Provider and package Average download / upload Price Minimum term
Hyperoptic 500Mb Ultrafast 522 / 508 Mbps From £16/month 24 months
Community Fibre 500 Mbps 500 / 500 Mbps From £16/month 24 months
Gigaclear Odyssey 600 600 / 600 Mbps From £24/month 18 months

Availability varies by address. Several offers have scheduled price increases, and some networks charge for non-standard installation. Check the full price schedule and any upfront charge for the offer available at your address before comparing the total contract cost. You can also compare broadband deals available in your area.

The biggest difference from M500 is not always the download figure. Hyperoptic and Community Fibre list upload speeds close to their downloads, while several national alternatives offer higher upload averages than M500. If you send large files or back up work to the cloud, that may matter more than a small difference in download speed. If you mainly stream and browse, choose on total cost and availability rather than paying extra for upload capacity you won’t use.

Is M500 worth it compared with M350?

M500 is worth considering over M350 when the extra capacity solves a real problem or costs only a little more across the full term. For example, you may notice the difference if several people download games, stream in high resolution and join video calls at the same time.

M350 is the more sensible choice when your home’s current usage is modest and the lower package saves a meaningful amount. If your video calls are clear, streams don’t buffer and downloads finish in an acceptable time, a higher headline speed may not improve daily life enough to justify a higher bill.

There is no universal price difference between these packages. Offers can vary by postcode, promotion and contract. Compare the current M350 and M500 options returned for your address and look at every scheduled payment before deciding.

Is M500 worth it for gaming and working from home?

Is M500 for gaming and working from home

M500 has more than enough download capacity for ordinary online gaming and home working in most households. But download speed alone doesn’t determine whether a game feels responsive or a video call stays clear.

Gaming depends heavily on latency, the time data takes to travel between your device and the game server. Wi-Fi signal, router placement, household congestion and the route to the server can matter more than moving from M350 to M500. A wired Ethernet connection can help remove Wi-Fi as one source of delay.

For home working, the 52 Mbps average upload speed is more relevant than the download headline for sending files, backing up work and supporting video calls. It should be ample for typical home use, but people who regularly upload very large files should compare the actual upload speed available on alternatives too.

The router and its location matter as well. A fast package can still feel poor in a room with weak Wi-Fi. Our guide to the best broadband routers in the UK explains what to look for, while our broadband packages guide covers the differences between common package types.

Will M500 give you 516 Mbps on Wi-Fi?

Not necessarily in every room or on every device. Virgin Media’s average is a package speed figure. The speed reaching a phone or laptop can be lower because of distance from the router, walls, interference, older Wi-Fi hardware or other devices using the connection.

That distinction matters: upgrading the broadband package can increase the capacity coming into the home, but it won’t fix every Wi-Fi dead spot. Before paying more for M500, check whether the issue is slow broadband to the hub or poor Wi-Fi between the hub and a particular room. Test near the router over Wi-Fi, then compare with a wired connection if you can.

Virgin Media also sells WiFi Max as a separate or included feature on some offers and customer plans. Its terms, eligibility and any guarantee can change, so check the current provider details rather than assuming M500 includes whole-home Wi-Fi support. If the main problem is coverage around the house, compare the cost and conditions of WiFi Max with a suitable mesh system or router upgrade.

What should you check before ordering M500?

Use the offer shown for your address and check these points before you place an order:

  • The average download and upload speeds listed for the specific package.
  • The minimum contract term and any setup or activation charge.
  • Every scheduled monthly price change during the contract.
  • The total amount payable over the minimum term, including upfront charges.
  • Whether the offer includes a phone, TV, mobile or Wi-Fi add-on you actually want.
  • The cancellation and early-exit terms if you move or change your mind.
  • Whether the package is available at your address and the estimated speed shown at checkout.

M500 offers can appear with different contract lengths and bundles. A lower opening price may not be the lowest total cost, and a bundle only adds value if you would use what it includes. Compare the complete order summary with the alternative packages returned for your postcode.

Who should choose Virgin Media M500?

M500 is a strong option for a busy home that wants high download capacity without paying for the top tier by default. It makes sense when several people are online at once, large downloads are common, and the full-term price is competitive with the slower options available at your address.

It is less compelling when your household’s usage is light, the price jump from M350 is large, or you expect the package speed to fix poor Wi-Fi coverage. In those cases, a lower tier or a better Wi-Fi setup may be the smarter spend.

My view: don’t buy M500 just because “500 Mbps” sounds future-proof. Choose it when the speed, upload capacity and full contract price fit your household. If Gig1 is only marginally more expensive, compare it properly. If M350 is much cheaper and already meets your needs, keep the saving.

Should you choose Virgin Media M500?

M500 is a capable package, but it is not the right answer for every home. Its 516 Mbps average download and 52 Mbps average upload give a busy household plenty of capacity. The strongest reason to choose it is a combination of multiple simultaneous users, regular large downloads and a competitive full-term price.

Before ordering, compare M500 with M350 and Gig1 using the actual offers available at your address. Check scheduled price changes, contract length, add-ons and total cost. If the price difference buys capacity your household will use, M500 is a sensible upgrade. If not, take the cheaper package and spend the difference where you will notice it.

Virgin Media M500 Frequently asked questions

What speed is Virgin Media M500?

Virgin Media lists M500 at an average download speed of 516 Mbps and an average upload speed of 52 Mbps. The speed your devices receive can differ, particularly over Wi-Fi.

Is Virgin Media M500 good for 4K streaming?

Yes. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for one 4K stream, so M500 has far more download capacity than one stream needs. The advantage is the extra headroom when several people and devices are active together.

Is M500 faster than M350?

Yes. Virgin Media lists average downloads of 516 Mbps for M500 and 362 Mbps for M350. Compare the full contract price difference to decide whether the additional speed is worth paying for.

Is M500 better than Gig1?

Gig1 is faster, with a published average download speed of 1,130 Mbps and upload of 104 Mbps. M500 may be better value if your household doesn’t need that capacity or if Gig1 costs substantially more. Check both offers at your address.

Is M500 full fibre?

M500 is the name of a Virgin Media package tier. The package name alone does not tell you the physical network connection serving your address. Check the service and offer details Virgin Media gives you during its address check.

Can I get Virgin Media M500 at my address?

Availability depends on Virgin Media’s network and the offers open to your address. Enter your postcode in the comparison above to check the current result.

Does M500 include WiFi Max?

Not necessarily. WiFi Max may be included with some plans or offered separately, depending on current eligibility and terms. Check your order summary and Virgin Media’s current WiFi Max conditions before relying on it.

Is M500 good for working from home?

For typical video calls, browsing and file use, M500 provides ample capacity for most homes. Its listed 52 Mbps average upload speed is useful for sending files and video calls, but Wi-Fi coverage, latency and simultaneous household use still affect the experience.
